Kanji a Day #1

Kanji - those lovely Chinese characters adopted by the written Japanese. These are used alongside the much simpler Hiragana and Katakana.

I’ve always find it hard to learn Kanji mainly because of the amount of memorization you have to deal with. And when you’re  in the age of multi-tasking, schedules and memory gaps, it’s no walk in the park. Good for you if you have a photographic memory.  (ihetchu! *kidding!*)

In learning Kanji, there is at least two things you have to be mindful of - (1) the stroke order and (2) the reading. Yes, Sir, there are rules for these.  The Japanese language is easy enough to speak if your native language is in phonetic syllabary as well but the written Japanese is not as simple as that. Then there’s the challenge of changing readings when one kanji is used with a different hiragana or another kanji - it just morphs! And I get confused. A lot. I have no right to teach you those now!

So, what I can do is feature a kanji or two (or three) in a post and we can all try to learn it for the day! Eventually, I will be able to better explain how each on mutates. =)

Daily Nihongo: Classroom Instructions

Today, I begin the series of posts in an effort to review what (is left of what) I know of the beautifully complicated Japanese language, and hopefully improve my knowledge (and graduate from being a beginner!). Baby steps until we can join the marathon!

Classroom Instructions

1. Please listen きて ください Kite kudasai
2. Please say (it). いって ください Itte kudasai
3. Please say (it) louder. おおきな こえで いって ください Ookina koe de itte kudasai.
4. Please say (it) again. もういちど いって ください Mouichido itte kudasai.
5. Please say (it) in chorus. いっしょうに いって ください Isshouni itte kudasai.
6. Please look at it. みて ください Mite kudasai.
7. Please write (it). かいて ください Kaite kudasai.
8. Please be quiet. しずかに して ください Shizuka ni shite kudasai.

I am open to corrections, suggestions but not violent reactions. Respect. I am not Japanese to begin with, not a teacher and not writing these as full-on lessons but just bits of reviews and for reference. You may ask me about my little posts and I will try to answer them as best I can! (If you do correct me, make sure you know what you’re talking about as I’ve got teachers I can ask, too! :P ) The idea here is properly learning something new and have a better understanding and bigger appreciation to the Japanese language.

Can’t read the damn, fancy writings? Learn the basics - Hiragana and Katakana Characters! :D

Youtube presents: Life in a Day

Life in a Day is a documentary film project by YouTube, announced on July 6, 2010. Users send in videos of themselves on July 24, and then Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald will edit the videos into a film, consisting of footage from some of the contributors. The completed film will be screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011. The project continues the tradition of humanity attempting to capture the essence of life on Earth as exhibited in projects like the ‘A Day in the Life’ series, and Satellite Films’ 2004 world documentary, A Moment on Earth. [source]

I saw the news about this project on CNN the other day and just thought it was brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. I’d love to see what great directors Kevin Macdonald and Ridlet Scott will create out of this! This would be historical. Even epic.

It makes you think though. How is it in your day? When others wake up in the break of dawn to start working on their small pieces of earth to plant and grow things, other are just coming home from a mad party, drunk with stupid happy smiles on their faces. These maybe extreme comparisons but it is how a day can go by.

Me? My day’s usually uneventful. Work in front of the computer. That’s all it is lately. Sending a video of my day would be a waste of time for anyone to watch.

How’s yours? I hope it’s worth recording.
